A billion several years in the past
&#13
—while in this article on Earth
&#13
multicelled existence was arising and spreading—
&#13
in a galaxy considerably significantly absent
&#13
two spinning black holes danced ’round one a different,
&#13
rippling the fabric of space and time.

The ripples, known as gravity waves
&#13
sucked strength from the holes’ orbit, so
&#13
The holes spiraled inward,
&#13
   eclipsing every other,
&#13
   toward a climactic collision:

The holes,
&#13
at fifty percent of gentle pace,
&#13
   collided catastrophically
&#13
     and merged
&#13
        in a short, cataclysmic storm
&#13
        of writhing and twisting spacetime
&#13
that introduced the waves to crescendo.

The climaxing gravity waves
&#13
   surged into interstellar space.
&#13
Spreading across our universe,
&#13
     they stretched and they squeezed
&#13
        all that they achieved
&#13
        (stars and planets and nebulae…)
&#13
     in designs that encoded
&#13
        a portrait of their beginning:
colliding holes and spacetime storm.

The gravity waves have been hugely sturdy,
&#13
with fifty times extra full ability
&#13
   —more luminosity—
than all of the mild from all of the stars in all of our universe, mixed.

Fifty universe luminosities
&#13
   from two black holes colliding.
&#13
But not any light-weight. Not any x-rays. Not any gamma rays or radio.
&#13
   No electromagnetic waves at all,
&#13
      None of any type.

Fifty universe luminosities
&#13
carried wholly and exclusively by gravity waves,
&#13
   by tendices and vortices, entwined,
&#13
by buildings created from warped spacetime.

Fifty thousand decades ago,
&#13
when people shared Earth with Neandertals,
&#13
the waves plunged into our galaxy:
&#13
   The Milky Way. Our home.

On September fourteen of 20 fifteen
&#13
they dove into Earth in Antarctica.
&#13
Whispering up by Earth’s bowels unscathed,
&#13
   and rising around New Orleans,
&#13
     the waves encountered LIGO
&#13
—a sophisticated and massive, L-formed product
&#13
designed and developed to understand them.

In LIGO the gravity waves stretched and squeezed
&#13
two very long beams of light-weight,
&#13
which extracted the portraits the waves encoded:
   colliding holes and spacetime storm.

A momentous Eureka Event, it was
&#13
humans’ initially second of get hold of
&#13
with the Warped Side of Our Universe.
