Lesson plans for kindergarten help kids become effective learners by building their self-confidence, creativity, and practical skills for a variety of subjects, including reading, writing and maths. It’s essential for young children to get a head start on important elementary school skills with quality lesson plans that have fun themes and easy-to-follow instructions. The main purpose is to ensure all children have a well-rounded education and continue to be motivated, lifelong learners. In this blog, we share some reasons why quality lesson plans are important for Kindergarten students’ success.

Routine and Structure:

Just like adults, kids feel more confident and safer when their daily routines are familiar and predictable. A regular daily schedule and step-by-step routines help kids know what to expect during the day. Lesson plans with schedules and routines help kids learn better because they feel like they have more control over their environment. By giving students similar tasks during most lessons, the lesson will be less chaotic because the students will know what is expected of them. For example, if you always start your lesson by talking about the learning topic and goal from the lesson plan, your students will know what they’ll need to demonstrate to be successful. Also, if you always put in your lesson plan for English that after talking about the learning topic and goal, students should get their writing books from the tray on their own, students will be ready for the next step without much effort from the teacher.

Increased Freedom and Child-Led Activities:

There’s more to student choice than just picking a topic. It’s about giving students more control over their learning as a whole. This is especially true in schools that value creativity, design thinking, and learning through projects. Of course, younger students are not able to make all the decisions, but letting them have their own choice can be empowering. Here are a few ways we can give younger students more freedom:

  • Let students ask the questions.
  • Let the students choose the resources and materials
  • Let the students pick their own groups.

Still, the teacher is the expert, and not every decision should be made by the students. There are times when giving children fewer options makes them think of new ideas. But when we give students choices, they feel like they are in charge of their own learning. We respect their independence and give them the tools they need to be the lifelong learners we want them to be.

Facilitates Learning Through Play:

When it comes to teaching through play in Kindergarten classrooms, play lessons are very effective. Teachers use play lessons during their students’ free time to help them build stamina, plan their play, solve problems, and do a lot more. Play should be incorporated into lesson plans for younger students as it helps them to make sense of their world in a fun and meaningful way.

Play lessons give teachers a chance to teach explicitly about a skill that all students could use, especially since they are young and have never been to school before. For instance, if you notice that many of your students mostly play alone without talking to each other, you could use a focus lesson to show them how to play together and talk to each other while they do so.

Good lesson plans for younger students help them to become more effective learners by providing routine and structure, an increased sense of freedom and the ability to learn through play.
